Capacity Builders

Capacity Builders

Capacity Builders is a boutique consulting firm specializing in collaborative initiatives and the development of nonprofit organizations.

Capacity Builders has overseen the creation and implementation of Food n More. Bill Locke, President and Founder of Capacity Builders, serves as the Manager of the Coalition responsible for the Food n More Project. This cross-sectoral coalition will provide joint procurement, centralized warehousing and community-wide distribution of food to vulnerable Calgarians in every neighborhood.

In the past 25 years, Capacity Builders has worked with over 200 nonprofits, community groups, foundations and government bodies. That includes regional, national and international organizations in Canada and around the world. Capacity Builders brings experience in many sectors, including community development, social services, homelessness, disabilities, mental health, aboriginal networks, youth, arts and international development.

Organizations of all kinds need to be learning and improving continually, if they want to fulfill their mandates in a fast-changing world. Take the pressure off – provide your board, senior management and staff with the support they need:

  • New set of eyes
  • Objective advice
  • Coaching
  • Personal inspiration
  • Professional guidance
  • New connections and resources

One of the greatest challenges – working together with other stakeholders to bring about collective impact. Leaders often find it very difficult to govern, manage and provide healthy processes at a community-wide level in a win-win fashion. When partnering organizations have different organizational cultures, values, languages, personalities, and agendas, it can create a win-lose situation with diverging agendas, misalignments and conflict.

How can diverse organizations come together so they can develop and implement Comprehensive Community Projects (“CCP’s”) successfully? What are some of the most effective ways to bring cohesion - united structure, joint management and uniting processes?

To assist leaders to make their way through the complicated process of such large projects, Capacity Builders published the Guide to Collaboration: Working Models of Comprehensive Community Projects by Bill Locke and Dr. Joel Christie (2010). This guide provides tips and techniques related to governance, including structures, strategies and processes.
